Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
-
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) utilizes magnetic pulses to stimulate the area of the brain responsible for mood and emotional regulation.
With certain mental health conditions, this area of the brain is underactive, leading to the distressing symptoms of depression and anxiety. TMS helps to “wake up” this part of the brain.
-
1*Wellness utilizes a NeuroStar TMS machine, which is FDA indicated for treatment resistant depression and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
TMS is non-invasive. A magnetic coil is placed near your head and delivers magnetic pulses to the area of your brain responsible for mood and emotional regulation.
These magnetic pulses may help improve function within that area of the brain, allowing the brain to better perform its natural ability to regulate mood and emotion.
-
TMS therapy can assist with reduction of symptoms, particularly for clients who have not had success with other forms of treatment.
TMS focuses on healing the brain by targeting it directly, rather than having to work through the whole body like medications do. The magnetic pulses help to activate the part of the brain responsible for mood and emotional regulation, without the systemic side effects of medication.
While benefits are not guaranteed, 83% of clients who completed the Neurostar treatment cycle saw measurable improvements in their depression symptoms. 62% of clients saw a complete resolution of symptoms.
-
Many clients experience a tapping or clicking sensation at their scalp near the magnetic coil during a treatment session. This typically goes away once the treatment session has ended.
The most common side effect for clients is temporary pain or discomfort near the treatment site. Typically this resolves within the first week of treatment.
Less than 5% of clients experience adverse effects which keep them from completing treatment.
There are no systemic side effects and no effects on cognition.
Clients are conscious during each treatment session. Clients who are able to drive to their treatment session are able to drive from their treatment session.
-
Each TMS session is around 20 minutes long, with total appointment time lasting around 45 minutes.
Clients receive 36 (thirty-six) TMS sessions over the span of 7 (seven) weeks.
As with any medical treatment, completion of the treatment course is imperative for quality outcomes. Results are not guaranteed, but seen by a majority of clients.
